On Saturday 15th August, the Jurors and Officers of Warwick Court Leet – Warwick’s historical legal body – will enact an Assizes Day; one of Warwick’s most distinctive and entertaining traditions originating from the 16th Century.
Held annually by Warwick Court Leet, this colourful event transforms the town centre into a living celebration of centuries-old customs.
Founded under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Mary I in 1554, the Court Leet was once responsible for maintaining standards in the marketplace.
Long before food inspectors and trading standards officers existed, appointed officials ensured that bread was the correct weight, ale was fit to drink and meat, fish and cheese were wholesome and safe to sell.
Today, Warwick Court Leet continues to bring these historic roles vividly back to life. Officers and Jurors of the Court, dressed in traditional robes, visit participating local traders to inspect, purchase and sample their goods.

Watch as the Ale Taster carefully judges local brews, the Bread Weigher checks freshly baked loaves, and the Fish, Cheese and Flesh Tasters examine produce with a blend of ceremony, good humour and historical authenticity.
If the tasting is found to be good and wholesome for the townsfolk of Warwick, the purveyor or shopkeeper is presented with a Court Leet certificate and a sprig of green, so that all knew their offerings had been approved by the Court.

Shopkeepers and visitors alike enjoy the spectacle, with plenty of opportunities to chat with Court members, learn about the town’s history and experience customs that have been preserved for nearly 500 years.
